The Thrill of the Hunt: Get Real in Your Job Search

This book, by Kathleen Conners opens with a chapter on how to Get Real with your job search. The link is to an excerpt from the book. You can find it for $15.50 at Amazon - looks like a good investment! The author also offers some good ideas for your search on her web site: www.kconnersllc.com

Search Page Links

This table can be the start of your search process in the world of search engines.

Before you fire off your resume through the search engine's system, though, check to see if you have a network contact in the target company (they don't always show it). If so, send it this way, and directly through your contact. The absolutely best way to get on the callback list is to have your person hand-carry it to the hiring manager, or failing that, to the HR person or recruiter working on the position. A recent statistic published in the Press Democrat pointed out that fewer than 2% of job seekers find positions solely through internet search engines, while more than 40% find their next position through a network contact.

It's also instructive to conduct a search for PMP in the body of the search databases - it's now a common requirement that a project manager be PMI-certified.

Search Site Name Notes
Monster.com Easy-to-setup search agents, you can have up to five for multiple search targets (none of us is one-dimensional!). Send results to yourself daily or weekly (daily is recommended until you get the hang of the volume per email).
Dice.com Formerly aimed at technical jobs, Dice has expanded significantly, now offering all levels of management postings as well. They are terms- agnostic (meaning they have all forms of contract and employment offers. Dice allows you to set up multiple "profiles" - your resume and a list of your job criteria, but only one is your "primary." The Dice list is made available on a fee basis to recruiters and hiring companies, so you could get a call from someone (although in this market, it ain't likely). Finally, Dice allows you to set your current interest level (actively searching, interested in hearing about new opportunities, temporarily off the availability list).
Craig's List Craig's list has syndicated through lots of geography and is an amazing collection of online classifieds, including job listings. This link takes you to the North Bay Area page which has jobs on it (look closely, now). Seems like they have postings other places don't, but it's not clear why...feels more like a direct connection to the underground. There's a San Francisco version for those who commute.
HotJobs Now part of Yahoo, so you'll need your Yahoo login or create one if you don't have it yet (same one you use for the PMI-WCC groups). HotJobs looks a lot like Monster.com, or at least it is coming to look like Monster.com - new features are showing up almost every week at this writing (February 2003). Enter one or more resumes and store cover letters (nice touch). As with Monster, you can apply for jobs online, or send a direct email if there's appropriate contact info. Notice that some posters tell you to respond only through HotJobs.
JustProjectManagerJobs.com Couldn't resist this one, but coverage is not deep. The positions seem real enough (you have to actually watch for phony postings these days), but the geographical coverage is nationwide, and thin for a small area like the Bay Area.
NorthBayCareers.com Interesting variation - there are no job postings on this site, but there are links to companies in our North Bay world that have job openings and who have thought to get themselves linked here. Some employers are paying a little extra to be "featured," meaning they get their name listed at the top of their various categories, and an icon link on the home page (AutoDesk and Fireman's Fund are current featured employers). Good place to locate a set of specific targets to go after.
